The area Berwari Bala was destroyed in the 80s. The deported families could only return to their villages after the setting up of the exclusion zone.

Parts of the villages could not yet be re-inhabited as the families did not have the necessary means. A particularity of the area is the fact that Kurdish and Assyric families used to live together in a lot of the villages. These families want to jointly rebuild their villages once again. Therefore, the Kurdish and Assyric people were to start a new village life together in Cidide and Seferiya. Aid for the construction of houses was to be given to these families.

The area is well suited to cattle rearing and is also famous for its apples. However, the returning people have neither animals nor other means to build irrigation plants. Therefore, new irrigation plants were to be constructed in the area in order to boost production of fruit and vegetables. Moreover, the families were to receive one-off financial assistance for the purchase of livestock. Cattle breeding was to be re-established.

In order to make school education available to the children, a secondary school (grades 7 – 9) for the 160 pupils from the surrounding 10 villages was to be built in the village Qumri. A hall of residence was also to be constructed for the students from the more remote villages.

After we had completed two irrigation plants and started the construction of the secondary school last year, we could again continue with the building activities from May onwards. The irrigation shall be discussed with the farmers in the near future in order to utilise the irrigation plants more effectively.

Target Group

240 small farming families consisting of 1272 people who originally come from these villages and 160 pupils from the same villages; 320 families from the area Welati Jeri who currently live in tents.

The destroyed Kurdish villages should be reconstructed, also in the subdistrict Amadiya. However, the farmers who should and want to return to their villages do not have the means to reconstruct the villages by themselves. The families are poor and do not have the ability to create a new life for themselves. There is a lack of housing, farming equipment, irrigation plants and institutions for education and health care.

In the villages Sarke, Xasto, Xasto Aliya, Latka, Mille Meydane, Kola and Dihike the families who are willing to return were to be supported by construction of housing, irrigation plants and animals, so that they can start the reconstruction of their villages. Furthermore, a primary school was to be built for Sarke, Xasta and Xasto Aliya.

Target Group

160 families consisting of 950 people who originally come from these villages and 60 children from the villages Sarke, Xasto and Xasto Aliya; 320 families from the area of Welati Jeri who currently live in tents.

Activities

Construction of housing, distribution of livestock in the villages Xasto, Xasto Aliya, Latka, Mille Meydane, Kola and Dihike;

Primary school for the 60 children from Sarke, Xasto and Xasto Aliya and

Support for the rural out-patient centre for the refugees from the area Welati Jeri.
